We’ve Launched an Additional Method for Neighbours to Share Environment & Safety Concerns

Feb 8, 2023

In addition to the avenues already available including calling (295-5111) or emailing () BELCO’s Occupational, Health, Safety & Environment (OHSE) team, an additional method for our neighbours to share any environment or safety concerns that may arise has been launched.

If any of our neighbours have any environment or safety concerns in regards to our operations and equipment, they can now provide details via the dedicated page on our website. Once received, a member of the OHSE team will be in contact within 48 hours. Depending on the type of concern, our team will arrange a property visit and conduct an impact assessment. After this impact assessment has been completed, mitigation remedies will be provided as appropriate.

If you are our neighbour and wish to share any environment or safety concerns you may have with us, please visit: Your Concerns | BELCO

Our OHSE team constantly monitors the effects of the plant, both on the adjacent neighbourhood and across Bermuda. They work closely with The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to ensure that BELCO emissions are within required limits.

We meet the highest international standard for our environmental management system, maintaining the ISO 14001 certification. Additionally, we are in compliance with the Clean Air Act 1991 and the Regulations 1993. Each quarter, our OHSE team reports data from all quality monitoring programmes to the Environmental Authority.

Concerning water quality, with the support of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research and DENR, BELCO conducts tank water testing annually. To date, all results have shown that all water tested meets the primary standards for safe drinking water set by the US, the UK and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Air Quality is also monitored through the use of portable ambient air quality monitoring stations and in-stack mounted opacity monitors. We continue to meet and surpass the standards set by the Bermuda Clean Air Act and subsequent regulations. Reports on the collected data are provided quarterly to the DENR and the Environmental Authority.

When there is an incident that affects neighbouring properties, mitigation efforts may include roof painting, property cleaning, vehicle cleaning, tank cleaning and installing water filtration systems. BELCO is committed to mitigating these impacts and communicating with our neighbours regularly.

OHSE Director, Mark Pacheco said: “We are committed to working together with the community to minimise and mitigate the affects our operations have on neighbouring properties. We are acutely aware of the impact that our operations have on some of our neighbours and we want to hear from them by calling, emailing or using our new online reporting method. We  appreciate our neighbours’ patience as we work to optimise our operations and further minimise our impact.”
