As we are experiencing increased temperatures this summer, we may be spending more time in and around swimming pools. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports 60 electrocutions and nearly 50 serious electrical shocks involving electrical hazards in and around swimming pools since 1990. We must make safety a priority.
Here are a few important electrical safety tips to remember this season:
- All outdoor receptacles should be covered to keep them dry.
- Electrical devices and cords should be kept at least 10 feet away from water sources.
- Never handle electrical devices when you are wet – either from water activities or from perspiration.
- Make sure there are no power lines over a swimming pool.
- Make sure all electrical equipment used for swimming pools (even the cleaning equipment) is grounded.
