Some storms, contain very little rain, which can cause the air to become laden with salt that sticks to transformers. When the transformer heats up the salt becomes liquefied which causes short circuits and sometimes a fire. If you see a pole fire stay well clear and call 955.

💨 🌴 Downed power lines are extremely dangerous! Always assume that downed power lines are energised and dangerous. Stay at least 33 feet—or 3 car lengths—away. Stay clear of piles of debris or fallen foliage that may conceal live power lines. If you do come across a downed power line, do not run. Keep your legs together and shuffle at least 33 feet away with both feet on the ground.

💬 BELCO Managing Director Shelly Leman said: “I would ask the public to have patience as our crews work to restore power. Please also give crews room to work and if barriers are in place please do not move them or drive around them. I would also ask customers not to call to report power outages as we have a limited number of telephone lines, which must be kept open for emergency calls, such as pole fires, downed power lines, and other critical emergencies.”

👉 Did you know? Pole fires are a constant threat during severe storms. Some storms contain very little rain, which can cause the air to become laden with salt from the ocean that sticks to transformers. When the transformer heats up the salt becomes liquified, causing short circuits and sometimes a fire.
🔥 If you see a pole fire, immediately call 955 to report!

Due to the passage of Hurricane Imelda, we will close our walk-in cashier service in the lobby of our Head Office at 27 Serpentine Road as of 12PM tomorrow, Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
As forecasts show a prolonged period of high winds and heavy rainfall, potentially severe at times from today through Thursday, we want to remind customers that if you lose power, our crews may not be able to respond immediately. They will begin restoration work as soon as it is safe to do so, as the safety of our team and th epublic is paramount.
We urge our medical device dependent customers to create a backup plan in case of power loss. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee electricity service for the duration of the storm, and alternative arrangements may be necessary.
We also ask residents not to call BELCO if their power goes out. Properties equipped with AMI meters will automatically alert us to outages. Keeping phone lines open for emergencies such as pole fires and downed power lines is critical.

It pays to be storm smart! Make sure you unplug any appliances, electronics or other sensitive equipment before the onset of high winds. While plug-in surge protectors protect against common, small surges, unplugging is the safest bet for lightning surges that may occur during a storm.
