Hurricane Melissa Updates

Oct 31, 2025

[ November 4, 2025  |  11:51am ]

💬 BELCO Managing Director Shelly Leman said: “While Hurricane Melissa passed to our northwest, the island did experience hurricane force winds which caused outages across the island. Most customers were restored soon after our crews began work when it had been deemed safe to do so. Our crews did experience challenges with several downed poles, pole fires and excessive vegetation in some areas which required our crews to spend time cutting and clearing that vegetation before they could work to restore power. I would like to thank our crews for their tireless work and dedication in getting all our customers’ power restored as quickly and safely as possible and also thank the public for their patience while we carried out restoration work.”

DID YOU KNOW
Transformers step down high voltage electricity to a level safe for homes and businesses. They can fail due to age, overloading, lightning strikes or contamination.

🔊 When a transformer fails, you may hear a loud bang, see a flash, or notice your lights go out suddenly. The damaged transformer must be safely removed and replaced with a new unit. This requires de-energising the lines, disconnecting the old transformer, installing and connecting the new one, and testing before restoration.

👉 A transformer replacement typically takes 2-4 hours and may affect multiple customers on the same circuit.

DID YOU KNOW
Trees and overgrown vegetation are a leading cause of power outages. When branches grow into power lines or fall during storms, they can cause short circuits, damage equipment or bring down lines entirely.

❗ Before BELCO crews can restore power, the vegetation must be safely removed. This requires de-energising the affected lines first to protect our crews. Arborists and line crews then work together to cut and clear branches, often using specialised equipment like bucket trucks and chainsaws. If the vegetation has damaged the lines or equipment, repairs must be made before power can be restored.

During major storms when multiple trees are down across lines, this process is repeated throughout the affected areas, which is why restoration can take several hours and in some cases days.

🌴 Trim Trees. Prevent Outages.

[ November 1, 2025  |  1:00pm ]

DID YOU KNOW
Not all of BELCO’s infrastructure is overhead—we also maintain an extensive underground network. Underground cables can fail due to water infiltration, ground movement, aging insulation or damage from digging.

🔍 Locating an underground fault requires specialised equipment to pinpoint the exact location. Crews must then excavate, expose the damaged section, and either splice in a repair or replace the entire cable run.

👉 Underground repairs often take longer than overhead work and may require coordination with other utilities and road restoration afterward.

DID YOU KNOW
A downed power line is extremely dangerous and should always be treated as live, even if it appears dead. NEVER approach, touch, or drive over a downed line.

When a line comes down, BELCO crews must first de-energise the section, locate the damage, and assess whether the line can be repaired or must be replaced. New wires may need to be strung, poles inspected for damage, and all connections remade before power can be safely restored.

📲 If you see a downed line, stay at least 33 feet away and call 955 immediately.

[ November 1, 2025  |  10:00am ]

DID YOU KNOW
Pole Fires are a constant threat and highly unpredictable as to where they will occur. Like Hurricane Melissa, some storms contain very little rain which can cause the air to become laden with salt that sticks to transformers. When the transformer heats up, the salt becomes liquified which causes short circuits and sometimes a fire. If you see a pole fire stay away and call 955.

BELCO implements a set of emergency procedures when a hurricane, or tropical storm, becomes a threat. In June, at the start of the hurricane season, we ensure that our internal emergency procedures are up to date. All departments within the Company are involved, and each has a vital role to play in restoring power to the island.

Our Crisis Management Team, or CMT, is stood up when a storm is named and headed towards Bermuda, with members from across the organisation to ensure we are prepared and coordinated.

DID YOU KNOW
When a utility pole comes down, whether from a storm, vehicle accident or decay, the restoration process is complex.

1️⃣ Crews must assess the damage and ensure the area is safe.
2️⃣ If power lines are attached, the electricity must be shut off to that section.
3️⃣ The damaged pole is then removed
4️⃣ A new pole is set in place, which requires heavy equipment and precise placement.
5️⃣ All hardware, crossarms and lines must then be reattached and tested.

👉 Depending on the complexity, a single pole replacement can take 4-8 hours.

⭐ During Hurricane Melissa, we experienced 5 downed poles in total.

❓ 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 ❓
After a storm, our priority is to restore power to all customers as quickly, and as safely, as possible. As soon as storm conditions subside, and it is safe to work, BELCO crews survey the damage to the electricity infrastructure, report findings and begin the restoration process. Depending on the damage created by the storm, this can be a lengthy process.

👉 Order of Restoration:
BELCO crews begin restoration efforts according to a specific plan until every customer has had power restored. Main line circuits are restored first, because main lines feed all other lines. Then branch lines that provide electricity to neighbourhoods. Finally individual homes can have their power restored.

⛽🔌 Generators are extremely useful tools, but they can also be extremely dangerous if not used correctly.

⚠️ Carbon monoxide fumes emitted by a generator’s exhaust cannot be smelled or seen and can be fatal. NEVER use a generator indoors. Generators should NEVER be operated in any part of your home or indoor space, regardless of whether there are open windows. Use a generator or other gasoline-powered machinery outdoors ONLY and away from windows.

⚠️ Hooking up your generator directly into your home power supply could energise the outside power lines and electrocute an unwary utility worker. If you must connect the generator through the house wiring to power appliances, use a qualified and licensed electrician to install an appropriate power transfer switch.

⚠️ NEVER store fuel for your generator in your house, and do not store fuels near a fuel-burning appliance such as a stove or water heater. Before refuelling the generator, turn it off and let it cool down. Gasoline spillt on a hot engine can ignite.

💬 BELCO Managing Director Shelly Leman said: “Our crews began damage assessment at 7:00 AM this morning and are currently focused on restoring power at five substations before proceeding to main lines. This methodical approach—substations first, then main lines, followed by branch lines, and finally individual homes—is essential for safe and effective restoration.

In addition to outages our teams are also addressing pole fires caused by high salt content in the air from Hurricane Melissa, combined with minimal rainfall to wash it away, adding complexity to restoration efforts.”

✅ RESTORATION CREWS ✅
Our restoration crews are still working to restore power at 5 substations and then will work to restore main lines. Our crews are also responding to emergency situations, such as pole fires.

📌 OUTAGE INFORMATION 📌
As of 9AM today, we have the following storm-related outages to report:

Devonshire 2162
Hamilton 1742
Paget 2046
Pembroke 3472
Sandy’s 1104
Smith’s 1476
Southampton 2246
St. George’s 1332
Warwick 2986

We have a total of 18,566 customers experiencing an outage.

⚠️ SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️
Pole fires are a constant threat and highly unpredictable as to where they will occur. Some storms, contain very little rain, which can cause the air to become laden with salt that sticks to transformers. When the transformer heats up the salt becomes liquefied which causes short circuits and sometimes a fire. If you see a pole fire stay well clear and call 955.

‼️IMPORTANT‼️
Please note that as restoration efforts continue, customers may experience temporary outages as crews de-energise circuits to safely effect repairs. As a result, outage numbers will fluctuate throughout this process.

[ October 31, 2025  |  8:35am ]

After a storm remember the following:
1. DO NOT call to report power outages until a public advisory has been issued.
2. DO call to report dangerous electrical damage, such as downed or sparking power lines.
3. Stay clear of piles of debris that may conceal live power lines.
4. Stay a safe distance away from fallen power lines, at least 3 car lengths or more.
