February Newsletter: 2024

Feb 9, 2024

Whether you plan to celebrate alone, with friends, a pet or someone special, Valentine’s Day is a holiday to celebrate the loved ones in your life. Prioritising safety can help ensure your day of love doesn’t turn into a day of heartbreak from sustaining an injury.

  1. Don’t release metallic balloons outside.
Metallic balloons are powerful conductors of electricity and should never be released near power lines to avoid power outages and damage. Keep your metallic balloons securely inside.
  2. Use flameless candles.
Set the mood without setting fires by using flameless candles. Not only do they help keep your indoor air quality at a healthy level and prevent fires, but they also help save energy.
  3. Be careful with heat.
We know things are heating up for Valentine’s Day, but be sure to never leave anything flammable near your fireplace or space heater and always turn them off before you go to bed or leave the house.

Energy Efficiency Tip: Phantom Energy

Chargers, gadgets and other electronics still pull energy, even when they’re turned off, aka “phantom loads”. To save your energy, unplug small appliances and electronics when they’re not in use. This can save up to 75% of the energy typically consumed by these devices.

BELCO Energy Efficiency Tips will help you save the environment, save energy, and save money!

Living Sustainably

So you want to spoil your special someone on Valentine’s day without causing harm to the environment? Kudos! So without further ado, below are 3 eco-friendly Valentine’s day tips that ensure you and your partner make the most of February 14 with the least negative impact on the environment.

  1. Skip the Cards.
According to Hallmark, hundreds of millions of Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged every year. Imagine how many trees were cut to produce that amount of Valentine cards. Not to mention the energy, fuel and other resources used to deliver those cards to the end consumers. So, this year, why not skip the Valentine’s card and simply look your partner in the eye and say, “I love you” or create your own using recycled paper and materials.
  2. Buy Sustainable Valentine’s Day Gifts.
Shop for eco-friendly and sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts. For instance, if you plan to give your partner a designer cotton shirt, consider looking at bamboo clothing brands first as bamboo is more eco-friendly than cotton. If he/she is a sporty person, how about a reusable water bottle or a tumbler? Instead of flowers for the lady, give her a succulent.
  3. Support Fair Trade Chocolate Brands.
Fair Trade chocolates are grown, manufactured and produced by businesses that support movements to improve the working conditions and quality of life of cocoa farmers and their families. Hence, when you buy Fair Trade chocolates this Valentine’s Day, you are supporting companies that help ensure the farmers are paid a fair wage for their products, have safe working conditions and make an effort to protect the environment.
