Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (“BELCO”) staff raised funds for charity during the Company’s Cup Match celebration for staff and retirees held on Wednesday, July 30.

The day began with a ceremony on the front steps of the BELCO Administration Building to dedicate and rename the building in honour of former president and CEO, Garry A. Madeiros. Garry worked at BELCO for 22 years, having started at the Company in 1985, and becoming President and CEO in 1994 until his retirement in 2007.

Under his tenure many projects were implemented and completed including the remodelling of the old office building to create a purpose-built Training Centre for employee training and development programmes.

Staff then enjoyed pre-Cup Match Celebrations at the Cup Match BBQ and Mini Vendor Market. During the afternoon there was also an opportunity for staff to donate to charity by participating in the ‘Dunk the Director’ Charity Event (Dunk Tank) with all proceeds donated to SCARS (Registered Charity #922).

BELCO President Wayne Caines said: “Every year at BELCO we celebrate the annual Cup Match holiday with an event for our staff and this year we raised funds for SCARS. We were also honoured to have several BELCO retirees attend the event. Events such as this are an important part of enhancing the camaraderie of our team, even though there are rivalries between Somerset and St. George’s supporters. I would like to thank all our staff for their participation and ongoing committement to excellence in their service to Bermuda and contributing to worthwhile causes that postitively impact our community.”
