According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), roughly 3,300 home fires originate in extension cords annually in the US. Extension cords can overheat and cause fires when used improperly.
Here are a few important tips to remember:
- Don’t plug extension cords into one another.
- Don’t overload extension cords.
- Don’t substitute extension cords for permanent wiring.
- Don’t nail or staple electrical cords to walls or baseboards.
- Inspect cords for damage before use.

Throughout the month of December, we held a food drive in support of the food drive hosted by the Royal Bermuda Regiment. Our team donated pastas, soups, canned goods, suagr and more!

In December, we held a toy drive in support of the “Toys for Tots” initiative by the Coalition for the Protection of Children. Our team provided toys, creative supplies, backpacks, books and more!
Apprentice Highlight: T’Shun Basden
BELCO apprentice, T’Shun Basden, is currently enrolled in the Heavy Truck and Transport Certification Programme at Saskatchewan Polytechnic that began in September 2022. T’Shun has been at BELCO since 2020 and is an apprentice mechanic on our Transport team.

Through a partnership with Climate Wise, we have been offsetting the carbon footprint of each one of our employees in order to bring our entire team to a state of carbon neutrality. To date we are proud to share that we have been able to offset 3,175.13 tonnes of CO2, which is the equivalent to the emissions produced from driving a typical family car 15,428,908 miles.
