In recognition of International Women’s Day, we are celebrating the women who are integral to our Company’s operations.
Hannah Lampit: Environmental Technician
Hannah has been working with BELCO’s OHSE team for just over a year. She says that BELCO has shown her that environmental advocacy is not only important within the science community but within the industry as well and allows her to make real impact in protecting our local environment.
The highlight of Hannah’s job at BELCO is the people. She said when she first started everyone was so helpful, whether she was learning a new programme or looking for something on site. She said the OHSE team welcomed her with open arms, and all the staff at the Company are friendly and enjoyable to work with. She says it’s “work hard, play hard” at BELCO, in the best kind of way.
Hannah’s background is in marine science which she says has always been predominantly female. However, she says working for BELCO, there are departments that are predominantly male but that this has not impacted her career or effected the working environment. The OHSE team is nearly half women, and there are women all throughout the Company, including managing director positions, so Hannah says she has never felt like she didn’t fit in being a female at BELCO.
Hannah believes her greatest asset, which she attributes to being a woman, is empathy. She says the OHSE team work with all different types of internal and external customers, and it is important to be able to empathise with each person when they express a safety or environmental concern.
Born in Bermuda, Hannah attended local primary and secondary schools before studying for her undergraduate and master’s degrees in the UK. She holds an undergraduate degree in Marine Biology and a master’s in environmental management, specifically the International Marine Environmental Consultancy (IMEC) programme. She said she enjoys volunteering through the Company’s volunteering programme, especially the partnerships with Meals on Wheels, Bermuda Cancer and Health, and The Bermuda Zoological Society.
Outside of work Hannah is part of a women’s run club “On the Run”, has created a small book club with friends and plays in a local string group. However, her favourite pastime is travelling!
Hannah doesn’t have a specific mentor but is thankful to all the women who have come before that have given her generation the confidence to know they can achieve their goals.
